House training tips

Your new puppy just won’t stop peeing when you first bring him home. Sorry to tell you about that, but hey, it’s best that you know before getting into this.

Your new puppy will look at their crate in the same way as you look at your bed - the place to go for nap time! As soon as you take your puppy out of the crate after night-time or naps, take him outside right away to the spot where you’d like him to pee. Praise is key.

Whenever your pup does it right, give him LOTS of praise. Never rub his nose in it. That just makes him fearful of you. And, unless you’re right there when it happens, you may as well not bother trying to correct him - he’ll have already forgotten the deed. If you catch him squatting, give him a shout, but NEVER, NEVER slap.

Place your pup into a crate to sleep at night. It may seem a bit mean, but trust me, it’s not. Putting a puppy into a crate is like putting a baby into a crib.

Limit feeding to times when you are around. As soon as your pup has eaten, again, take him outside right away to the spot where you’d like him to pee. Every time your puppy eats, he’ll poop!

And, here’s a neat idea. Rather than barking or scratching when he wants to go out, you can teach your dog to ring a bell. All you need to do is attach a bell to the door frame and each time you take your pooch out after sleeping and eating, rub his nose lightly on the bell before you go out. He’ll soon realize that he needs to sound the bell when he wants to go out. Because you can hear it, it’s great when you’re in a room where you can’t see the door and your pup wants out. We do the bell thing with our dogs and it works like a charm!

If after the first few nights your pup doesn’t quite understand that the crate is not a place to pee, try feeding your pup inside his crate. Dogs don’t like to sleep or eat where the defecate, so this double whammy should solve all of your problems!

Remember - kids wear diapers for up to three years!!! Don’t get too frustrated if your pup takes a few weeks to be house broken.

Good luck!
