Our Environmental Choices

We make practical and balanced decisions to reduce our environmental footprint. We’re not perfect – but every decision we make, we make it balancing the health and safety needs of our guests with options that protect the future of our planet.

We're honoured to be selected as a finalist in the 2010 Chamber of Commerce Paragon awards, which recognize our efforts in the environmental excellence category

Here are some of our environmentally responsible choices:

Renewable energy conversion

  • We have a geothermal system that uses ground heat to warm our kennel. It’s a 100 per cent renewable resource with no need for natural gas.

Tree planting

  • Since 2002, we’ve planted over 3,000 trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and are vital carbon sinks. It’s so amazing watching them grow knowing we’re making a difference.
Waste recycling and composting

  • Poo. Paper. Cans. Plastic. Glass. Batteries. We send about 80 per cent less garbage to the dump than we did five years ago!
Canine car pooling

  • A country kennel offers a lot of advantages for your dog. By using our shuttle service, each customer saves about 100 km in vehicle carbon emissions for every one-way trip.
Efficiency through lighting

  • We reduced the number of lights we use and replaced our old T12 flourescent lighting fixtures with energy-efficient T8's.
  • We installed lighting timers to reduce the amount of energy needed for lighting.
Little things making a big difference

  • Our spray-washer is solar powered by Mother Nature.
  • Where possible, we use planet-friendly cleaners such as Enviro Chem. (Bleach is most effective at killing canine parvovirus, so we use it.)
  • We replaced daily newspaper subscriptions with online news services
  • We hang doggie bedding after laundering rather than using a dryer
  • We have natural pest control provided by our cats, Wilma and Betty
Imagine if everyone did just a little bit more for our planet:
